Define Avant Garde...

3 comments:

  1. Avant garde, in the military sense, refers to the front soldiers, that is, those advancing toward the enemy first. In this way, we can see how avant garde refers to art that is preliminary, fresh, and ready to take a stab at innovation.

  2. I know that it is a French based word that is often used to describe something that is fresh, inventive, and somewhat out-there. Usually I will hear the word as describing something that is unseemly or strange that is off the norm. This would be a more refined word for something that is just plain weird. That is how I have both hear and read it to be....

  3. The front runner in any particular medium, whether artistic or otherwise. In military terms, the "sacrificial lambs" that go before the wave of an oncoming army. In any other sense, an individual or group that brings new innovations to a particular field.
